FLAK Part 1: the Filler Stitch Swatch

Here’s my first swatch from the Follow the Leader Aran Knit (FLAK) KAL. This is a selection of possible filler stitches.

Before washing:

And after washing and a light blocking:

The stitches I used were (bottom to top):
Moss stitch
Broken rib
Seed stitch
Pattern 4.19 from The Harmony Guide to Aran and Fair Isle Knitting
Double moss stitch

As you can see, the moss stitch had a real problem with biasing. The seed stitch was way too wide. The double moss was exactly on gauge and the broken rib and pattern 4.19 were very close. So far my favorite is Pattern 4.19. If I end up using it I will have to find out if it has an actual name.

Want to join the KAL? More information is here. (Thanks Cindy for the cool button on my sidebar - and the idiot-proof directions for getting it there!)

Welcome to the Blog-World!!

Moss stitch will bias for some people some of the time. It will block out.

Yours in the FLAK,

I hope I can do as good a job on my new blog. I am feeling a little "overwhelmed."

I know what you mean. I feel *totally* overwhelmed by this whole blogging thing. But at least I trust the FLAKers to be kind critics. :-)

Your Blog is great! Blogger can be a little challenging but it looks like you're getting the hang of it quickly! About the biasing, Joan Hamer mentioned on one of the gazillion posts (making research hard) to the FLAK a way to prevent biasing. Actually I just looked it up, she posted it on Aranknitlist. From her post - "I don't know if this has been mentioned before, so many posts, but I was taught a trick to keep the sts snug in doing moss, seed,
and ribbing. Before you take the stitch off the needle when changing to knit or purl, bring the yarn to the side needed for the next stitch. THEN take the stitch to the right needle. It seemed to help me with my tension as my moss stitch and ribbing always seemed to expand and the sts weren't popping. It seems to make a difference." Hope this helps! Tori

Hi, Tori!

I actually tried that in the swatch - I wonder how much worse it would have looked if I hadn't! :-)

I like that you did a sampler of your filler stitches. How neat. I settled for the moss stitch. It looks good to me.
I love your swatch. Your blog also looks good. I just started mine also.

I second 4.19. It's nice, and a nice change! http://jeniferknits.blogdrive.com
